Story
To celebrate World Refugee Day (20th June), we are organising a “Food from around the world” potluck to raise some money for Young Roots.
“Sharing food with others is a powerful symbol of love, care and connection. Food is perhaps the most powerful way to nurture relationships and to share cultures or traditions. Food says we are neighbours, friends, or chosen family. We are still alive, and we can feel joy. Food is healing. Food is home. That’s why making and sharing food is one of the most powerful acts of compassion.” (quote taken from https://refugeeweek.org/share-a-dish-at-the-great-street-feast/ ).
Bring a dish that means something to you – if you don’t want to cook, just grab it from the shop. This could be a food you grew up with, a meal that represents your heritage, or simply your favourite dish from another culture around the world.
Young Roots was founded in 2004 with the aim of supporting young refugees in the UK and internationally. Since then, our charity has supported many thousands of young refugees and asylum seekers to rebuild their lives and fulfil their aspirations amid an increasingly challenging environment for refugees. Since 2022, we are concentrating our efforts solely on our UK work and no longer internationally. We work with young refugees aged 11-25, most of whom are alone in the UK without their families. Our charity is London-based, with delivery areas in Brent, Croydon and King’s Cross.
