Ali: I would like to suggest Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT) to be this year’s charity. TCT offer support to young people diagnosed with cancer, both medically and socially. The charity funds trained nurses and youth workers to provide the necessary care and support to help cancer patients all over the country. An area of the charity I am particularly passionate about is the funding and operation of TCT-funded hospital wards, having been a patient there myself during my teenage years. The goal of these wards is to provide a comfortable and supportive environment for young people to receive treatment, and truly do make a nasty stay at hospital that bit brighter. The wards are kitted out with televisions, games, pool tables, PlayStations and social areas, which allow patients to become friends with each other and help each other through the tough times – although this once led to me being hustled by a one-armed pool shark! They also provide charity workers/counsellors, to be there to talk and listen to all the concerns and issues we had on a day-to-day basis (plus someone to play late night Uno with if you were receiving treatment in the wee hours!). On a local level, TCT fund and support two wards in Edinburgh – at the Western General Hospital & the Royal Hospital for Sick Children – and two in Glasgow – The Beaton West of Scotland Cancer Centre & The Royal Hospital for Children.
