Everest Base Camp Trek, 5 November 2024
We provide the best possible care to people affected by life limiting illness

Story

Each year I set myself a physical challenge. In 2024 and at the age of 66, it is to complete the Everest Base Camp Trek which is a 16-day adventure and includes hiking for 11 consecutive days. I am self-funding the challenge at a cost in the region of £3,570, plus the additional cost of buying suitable clothing and kit for the adventure.

In undertaking this challenge, I will be pushing my body and energy levels to a whole new level. I’ve never attempted hiking for consecutive days, certainly not 11 consecutive days. I’ve never experienced altitude either so I’m hoping that I can cope with the hiking, having enough energy, along with the reduced oxygen levels, and not suffering with any sickness. Furthermore, I am scared of heights and there are a number of rope bridges, some of which are quite high and long, that we will have to cross.

It would be wonderful to be able to obtain sponsorships and/or donations along the way for 4 of my favourite charities.

This page is for The Kirkwood Hospice

• The reason for me choosing the Kirkwood Hospice are my close ties to my hometown in West Yorkshire and for the support that Kirkwood provide to those in need. The Kirkwood are there to support anyone affected by a life limiting illness. Right now, over 3,000 people in Kirklees are living with an illness from which they will not recover. Your support means Kirkwood are there for them.

Your donations could typically be used for.

• A £10 donation could fund a virtual wellbeing session for a patient living with heart failure.

• A donation of £50 could pay for specialist counselling support for a patient and their family.

• £100 could provide vital support to a patient in their own home from one of The Kirkwood Nurses.

About the charity

The Kirkwood exist to improve the quality of life for local people, against all the odds. We help those in our care to live well and make the most of every single day. We make the complex simple by focussing on what’s important. And we support families and loved ones to live on − and live well.
