Story

❤️ Why We’re Fundraising in Nathan’s Memory

Nathan Summersgill‑Smith was the kind of person you never forget — an outstanding rugby player, a proud Royal Marine, and a kind‑hearted soul with a tash anyone would envy. At just 28, he was a devoted dad to little Noah, a loving husband to Amelia, and a son, brother, friend, and teammate cherished by everyone at Colne & Nelson RUFC.

Nathan’s life changed unimaginably fast. He was diagnosed with an extremely rare and aggressive cancer called NUT Carcinoma, a disease so rapid that within just five weeks of first falling ill, it had spread throughout his body. Heartbreakingly, Nathan passed away on Sunday 24th November.

💙 The Support Behind the Scenes

Throughout this devastating time, The Royal Marines Charity stood firmly beside Amelia and Noah. They provided emotional and financial support, helped navigate the overwhelming practical challenges that follow the loss of a loved one, and ensured the family never faced any of it alone.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers have also been a lifeline for Noah. Their community of bereaved military children has given him a place to belong — a space filled with friendship, fun activities, and the chance to make new memories during an unimaginably difficult time.

🏉 Nathan and Colne & Nelson RUFC

Since joining the club in 2020, Nathan was more than a player — he was a friend to everyone, a constant smile, and one of the first to offer help with anything. His presence lifted the club, on and off the pitch.

For us, creating an annual day in Nathan’s honour wasn’t just an idea — it was the obvious thing to do. It’s our way of celebrating the man he was, keeping his spirit alive within our rugby family, and giving back to the charities that have supported his loved ones so selflessly.
