Extreme Abseil (National Lift Tower) · 13 April 2024
We are karateka from Oxford Karate Academy and Oxon Karate Club undertaking an Extreme Abseil down the National Lift Tower in Northampton in memory of Shihan Paul Coleman, who passed away in Katharine House on 31 August 2023. I have never abseiled before and frankly don’t like heights (AT ALL) but THAT Joe Bennett tells me he has abseiled before and is an expert (so I'm totally relying on him!). Others are sadly busy on this day (nothing whatsoever to do with the height of the tower!) but continue to support us in this frankly insane venture. We will also be supported by our long-suffering friends and family as well as our extended karate family.
We hope to raise a good amount for Katharine House to thank them for looking after our ancient and beloved Shihan. Shihan Paul was admitted into the hospice on 16 July 2023 and, apart from a short spell in the Horton Critical Care Unit, he remained there until he passed away, surrounded as always by family, friends, and his loyal (long-suffering) karate students on 31 August 2023.
It was devastating to see such a strong, fit, vibrant personality diminished by cancer, and the staff at Katharine House made what could have been a horrendous period very special. Shihan Paul was visited by literally hundreds of friends from every phase of his life, with often tens of visitors every day and further video and phone calls to further friends around the world. He was able to spend quality time with his brother, Roy, and with his cherished sons, Aaron and Blade. Spike often provided music and song and there was singing, laughter and fun. The beautiful gardens provided a tranquil space where he enjoyed spending time with friends (and telling me I was pushing the wheelchair wrong - can I be trusted to push a wheelchair? No!). It was a pleasure to meet so many new and lovely people with this amazing man in common even if in terrible circumstances.
We will never forget the support the kind staff provided from the second he was admitted until his passing at the every end and even in support after the end. They treated him with care and compassion, and endless tea for him and his many many many visitors.
We his students at Oxford Karate Academy and Oxon Karate Club will never forget this special man and we aim to continue his legacy in the karate world.
Katharine House Hospice provides specialist palliative care for adults with incurable illnesses. This amazing team supports the patient and their loved ones too, ensuring that every moment matters. Your donation will mean more people can receive this care.
