Olwen's fundraiser for Race Against Blood Cancer

Olwen Sisupalan is raising money for Race Against Blood Cancer

Team: RABC Sahara Trek Team 2025

100km Trek in the Sahara Desert · 1 November 2025

The cure for chemotherapy-resistant blood cancers - such as lymphoma, leukaemia and myeloma - relies on finding stem cell donors with a similar ethnic background; currently 3 in 5 patients from black, Asian, mixed-heritage and minority ethnic groups do not find a match. Race Against Blood Cancer is a charity whose goal it is to increase the volume and diversity of people who register as potentially life-saving donors. It is estimated that there are approximately 2000 people currently seeking a stem cell donor and the chances of a best possible stem cell match vary greatly depend on your ethnicity – while White Northern Europeans needing a donor have a 71% chance of a best possible stem cell match, people from a BAME background have just a 37% chance of achieving the same due to the lack of ethnic diversity on the stem cell and bone marrow register. Race Against Blood Cancer is working to improve outcomes for patients by recruiting potential stem cell donors and raising awareness of the importance of registration. We want a future where every patient has the equal chance of a stem cell match: donors save lives.

Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page to find out more about the challenge I am taking on and why I’ve chosen to do this.

I’m trekking 100km in the Sahara Desert, over 5 days. I’ve trekked 100k before, and it was tough, but this time it’ll be so much tougher as I navigate not only the Sahara, but perimenopause, working around the effects of exhaustion, joint pain, muscle fatigue and uncontrollable body temperatures.

I’m raising funds for Race Against Blood Cancer (RABC), a small but mighty charity where I’m proud to serve as a trustee. RABC exists to give every blood cancer patient an equal chance of finding a lifesaving stem cell donor, with a focus on recruiting more people from Global Majority backgrounds who are underrepresented on the UK register. What I really love about RABC is that while our mission is to tackle this stark health inequality for people from the Global Majority, we bring people together across communities, faiths, and backgrounds to join the register.

If you feel able to sponsor me, I’d be so grateful. If you can’t, and you’ve got this far down my page, why not consider joining the register yourself? Signing up is quick, easy, and could give someone the ultimate second chance at life.
