Story

Woodbine Entertainment's 2022 obedient season has come to an end, and according to the operator's latest report, it's a season for history books. In a press release, the horse racing leader said the season generated the largest all-source single-season handle at C$621,782,346. Therefore, it broke the record set in 2018 to C$533 million.

Due to the unprecedented situation of March 2020 and related closures in 2020 and 2021, the 2022 purebred season was the first fullbread season at Woodbine Racecourse since 2019. Both the 2020 and 2021 racing calendar suffered delays and disruption due to health and safety protocols mandated by the province to prevent the spread of the virus.

For the 2022 purebred season, Toronto Track set a new all-source single-season handle record at C$621,782,346. Meanwhile, the track also continued its strong performance in overseas markets and set a record at a foreign handle of C$515 million. The amount was C$420 million, breaking the previous international handle for the 2021 season.

In the report, the group also reports that the home market area generated more than C$87.2 million in handling during the season. The purebred track averaged C$519,016 per race in 2022. This was a higher race average than the previous season as a result of an unprecedented situation. In addition, the average size of submissions in 2022 was 8.2, higher than the season average.

Additional highlights of the 2022 season include the fact that 25 race cards exceeded C$6 million. The previous record was 11 chapters in 2019. The 163rd edition of the prestigious Queen's Plate was won by Philly Moira, who led jockey Rafael Hernandez to victory. Meanwhile, Rico Woodbine Mile was captured by Modern Games.

Woodbine Entertainment CEO Jim Lawson shared that the group was pleased with the 2022 season results. He said he felt that when the unprecedented situation began, the determination and resilience of the industry would allow the sport to emerge stronger. And the organization's new record for the 2022 obedience season proves the sector is on the right track.

Finally, but in 2022, Ontario's horse racing leader announced that he would rebrand The Queen's Plate for the 2023 Woodbine obedience season. Next year, the famous race will be known as The King's Plate. The name change came after the death of Elizabeth II, succeeded by Charles III.

Without horse racing operators and closures like 2020 and 2021, the 2022 season will begin at Woodbine Racecourse on Saturday, April 22, 2023. Meanwhile, the 164th King's Plate is scheduled for Sunday, August 20, 2022. The full schedule of the track will be announced in the coming weeks.
