Story

New York Gov. Cathy Hocheol made an important decision this week because she received an approval or rejection bill. The bill in question would allow previously convicted criminals to be hired at state casinos. She received the bill for review on Tuesday after it was passed by the state Senate and Congress in June.

Currently, state law prohibits licensed casino operators from recruiting or hiring people convicted of any kind of felony. As expected, some critics have not been the most ardent supporters of the proposed legislation, even accusing it of being another example of crime-friendly politics in the Democratic Party. However, some casinos in the state welcome the bill.

Representative Gary Fritlow (D-Mount Vernon) commented that lawmakers are trying to provide more employment in casinos, and everyone deserves a second chance. Member for Fritlow said that people should not be denied employment because they have a criminal record. Joseph Adabo (D-Queens), MP and state senator, both supported the bill.

Under the proposed legislation, disqualification remains if an applicant interested in a casino license or occupation is convicted of a previous felony related to public integrity, embezzlement, theft, fraud or perjury. In addition, the New York State Game Board will still have the discretion to reject the license after reviewing the applicant's records.

Rush Street Gaming, which operates Reverse Casino Resort Shenectady, said it was not working on the bill, but opposed it. In a statement, the company said it supported the second opportunity and the legislature's commitment to strengthening the local workforce. And ultimately, the bill leaves the Commission with regulatory discretion to reject or issue game licenses.

Governor Hochul's side commented that the governor is currently reviewing the bill. Meanwhile, Conservative leader Gerald Casar says there are many people who have no criminal history to be employed in casinos and that the bill is an excuse to recruit criminals, an area the state should not entertain.

The bill to allow the employment of ex-convicts came as the state government issued up to three commercial casino licenses in the northern region. There are many candidates here now. For example, renowned real estate developer Stefan Soloviev has already expressed interest in bidding for a casino just south of the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, New York.

He will face competition from SL Green Real Estate and Caesars Entertainment, which teamed up with Jay-Z's Rock Nation to launch a premium casino resort in Times Square. But two of the most likely candidates remain Genting America's Resort World and MGM Yongkus Empire City, which have already received much support on the issue.
