Story
Jessie stayed at YMCA Burton from January 2025 to May 2026 after becoming homeless following a relationship breakdown. She had experienced depression, anxiety, learning difficulties and issues with cannabis and alcohol.
During her time with us, staff supported Jessie with emotional support, daily life skills that included budgeting, debt management and preparing for independent living. She set up a payment plan for council tax debt and learned to manage her money more effectively. She also received counselling from a our trained staff member, while dealing with difficulties maintaining contact with her son.
Jessie made significant progress, including stopping cannabis use and improving her financial management. In February 2026, she was awarded Band 1 housing status, allowing her to move towards her own home.
Staff supported Jessie with furniture, white goods, household effects from our furniture store and our team helped with moving home. Jessie successfully moved into her own flat in May 2026 is now living independently. Our move on staff member has supported Jessie during the transition, to ensure Jessie sustains her tenancy. She is just one of the hundreds of people the YMCA has supported this last year.
