Story
Transitioning from military to civilian life is anything but easy—and I say that as someone who has lived it. After 37 years of service, much of it spent in middle and senior management roles, I believed I was well prepared for the next chapter. I expected that with my experience, I would step straight into a good job with a similar salary. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
The reality hit hard. Finding employment became an uphill battle, and the constant rejections—whether at the application stage or in interviews—were incredibly disheartening. Over time, that steady stream of “no” began to erode my confidence. I felt isolated, and my sense of self-worth took a real hit. It was one of the toughest periods of my life.
But here’s what I learned: that difficult chapter doesn’t have to define you. Securing meaningful employment isn’t just about having a job—it’s about rebuilding purpose, confidence, and direction. And it is absolutely possible. With the right support, persistence, and belief in your own value, the path forward becomes clearer.
Meaningful employment is vital not only for service leavers like me, but also for our families and for veterans across the board. It can be the foundation for a successful and fulfilling future—and no matter how tough the journey feels, you can get there.
Sadly, not everyone makes that transition smoothly. Many service leavers—both men and women—find themselves without permanent accommodation, becoming part of the UK’s homeless population. Too many end up sleeping on the streets, with some turning to alcohol or drugs simply to cope. It should never reach that point for anyone who has served their country.
That is why I am trying to raise money for such a worthy cause. The Forces Employment Charity supports the Armed Forces community and provides lifelong, life-changing employment support to service leavers, veterans, and military families. Their work is truly invaluable in helping people regain stability, hope, and a future.
Please support them if you can. Your help can genuinely change lives.
