Story
The Lads of '69 Return!
55 years ago, as 17 year olds, we took part in the 1969 Oxfam fundraiser walking a 30 mile route from Amersham to Wembley Stadium. In April 2024 we plan to do it again.
In the summer of 1969 four Crewe Grammer School lads (Bill Ollier, Keith Randle, Peter Guy Jackson, and Ian Griffin) joined 50,000 others who set off from points all around London to walk to Wembley Stadium, raising money for Oxfam.
This April, the four of us will attempt the same route from Amersham to Wembley. Then we raised £40 - worth £850 in today's money. This time we’re aiming for £2000.
Why Now?
In 1969, we spent the night ‘sleeping’ on a roundabout next to Amersham Tube station. It was remarkably cold! This time, we’ll be staying in the comparative luxury of the Premier Inn in Rickmansworth.
In 1969, we attempted the walk in one day - without a supply of water - and in blistering heat. The oldest participant was 61. In April we’ll be appropriately dressed, carrying plenty of water, and doing the walk over two days. This time the youngest walker is 71.
In 1969 two of us didn’t make it to the end of the route and the other two ended up with heatstroke. This time we all plan to finish and live to tell the tale!
Take a look (above) at what the event was like in 1969!
The Cause
Around the world, Oxfam is working every day to end poverty.
The last few years have seen humanity face the challenge of increased poverty, climate problems, and natural disasters.
Oxfam is well known for continuously trying to fight back against all the strife, grief, destruction, and injustices in the world, and we are honored to lend a hand this year as we did 55 years ago.
