Story
For essential health services, like a cataract removal operation, older adults in Niger sometimes end up waiting a decade or more. According to the United Nations, Niger is the least developed country in the world. On the global Human Development Index, it ranks 189th out of 189 countries observed.
I am lending my support to these communities. I am fundraising to support 300 cataract operations in Niger this year.
Most of the country's 22 million population live in clusters in the south and west. Climate change, desertification, and inadequate public health services have left hundreds of thousands of older people with limited or zero access to eye care.
An estimated 20 million people across Africa are blind or visually impaired, more than 75% of which is entirely avoidable. This is an urgent problem that needs an immediate solution.
Muntada Aid has been in Niger delivering long-term humanitarian assistance and water solutions to communities for over three decades now.
