Rhys's fundraiser for the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem

Rhys Sutton-Harry is raising money for The Scottish Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem

Kielder Marathon · 4 October 2026

The Order was established in Scotland in 1989 and has grown continually since then. Currently the Lieutenancy comprises over 120 Knights and Dames of the Holy Sepulchre. There are both lay and clerical members and they are drawn from all areas of Scotland. The Lieutenancy is headed by a Lieutenant and a Grand Prior, both of whom are appointed by the Cardinal Grand Master in Rome. The Equestrian Order itself has its roots in the First Crusade at the end of the eleventh century when the leader of the Crusade, the French knight Godfrey de Bouillon, liberated the city of Jerusalem and established of the Latin Kingdom and Patriarchate of Jerusalem there. As part of his administrative reforms he established the Order of Canons of the Holy Sepulchre, which included not only religious but also knights with a specific command to defend and protect the Holy Sepulchre and the Holy Places. This practice continued until 1848 when Pope Pius IX re established the Latin Patriarch and at the same time re-organised the Order. The Order’s new constitution placed it directly under papal protection and established its role as supporting the work of the Latin Patriarch, as well as spreading the faith. Pope Pius XII gave the Order a Grand Master from among the Cardinals with the Latin Patriarch as its Grand Prior and this has continued to this day. Today the Order is under the protection of the Holy See and is officially recognised by countries throughout the world.

Story

Hi Everyone,

On the 4th October 2026 I'll be running the Kielder Marathon in support of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, a Catholic body that funds and distributes support to the historic area of the Holy Land primarily focussing on Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza however also benefitting Jordan and Cyprus. Aid received is used to fund food relief, medical aid and housing support. Alongside this the Patriarchate also supports various educational projects amongst others in these areas including schools and host of other similar projects. The Patriarchate is an essential charitable and social organisation in the region alongside its religious purpose and so the funds raised here are very much going to a worthwhile cause.

This fundraiser has been set up to donate directly to a UK based branch of the EOHSJ (Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem) as they form one of the primary worldwide pillars of support and fundraising for the Patriarchate.

This is the first marathon I'm attempting, although I have managed a number of halves in the past. The Kielder Marathon is 26.2 miles long and covers 2,021 ft of elevation gain across the route. My training plan shall be 4 months in total by the end, averaging around 5-6 hours of training per week. Whilst proving quite the challenge so far in both time commitment and keeping up with the training without injury, I'm very glad to be able to contribute in some way to a very worthwhile cause that is in need of support.

I would of course be very happy to answer any questions you might have!

If you are eligible, I would ask to make sure to check the box for Gift Aid as it enables more money to go to the charity at no cost to yourself!

Thank you in Advance!

Rhys
