Sadly, thousands of families in Wales live every day knowing their child’s life will be short. At the moment, they often face this without any care or support. Alone. Afraid. Isolated. Tŷ Hafan’s ambition is that when a child’s life will be short, no family should have to live it on their own.

Story

This year will see yet another triumphal return for the player everyone says should retire. When I say “triumphal” I’m using that in the sense of crawling back slowly and begging not to play. Despite all of that though I’m back! Back on what I regard as home ice down in Cardiff and supporting my chosen charity, Ty Hafan children’s hospice.

As well as playing hockey in the AllStars tournament in July this year I have also completed a coast-to-coast trek across England at Easter (18th - 21st April) following the path of Hadrian's Wall in FULL HOCKEY KIT! Well, minus the skates. This epic adventure can be followed across all social media platforms for those of you that missed it!

Please, please, please dig around own the back of the sofa or skip one pint down the pub tonight and send me your cash to support Ty Hafan.

I can’t change the sad reality of the endpoint for children with short lives but I can make sure that every moment of that short life is filled with opportunity. And not just for them but for their families too. Having been involved in kids’ hospices for a while now, I’ve been very struck by how much the siblings of the children in question need support. Managing your own sadness and loss, as well as the normal sibling rivalry challenges; why is it all about my sister/brother? And then the guilt of having those normal feelings against a sister or brother who is dying. This is complex and challenging stuff.

Luckily we have the expert care of Ty Hafan on hand to make it all work. My job (and now yours) is to make sure they have all of the tools and equipment and people they need to make the magic happen. So please sponsor me and get behind me and let’s ensure that children with short lives and their families get the most from their precious time.
