Samaritans is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential, non-judgmental, emotional support to anyone experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. The Sheffield branch receives over 30,000 calls a year - by phone, e-mail or visit - and is entirely reliant on voluntary support

Story

Team Sheffield Samaritans is running Sheffield 10K in order to raise some much needed funds for Sheffield Samaritans. We have a range of experiences with running but we're united in wanting to raise money through this challenge to make a real difference to the lives of the people who call us!

We all have times in our lives when we feel we have nowhere to turn, no one to talk to or that things are just very very dark. This can even lead to thoughts of suicide. Over 6500 people ended their own lives in the UK in 2022.

Samaritans offers a non-judgemental space for people to talk, work through their problems, and make their own decisions on their own terms. Sometimes that decision will be around whether they want to take their own life, and Samaritans are there to listen at those times too, when people may feel at their most alone and vulnerable. By offering a safe and non-judgemental space to talk, we can reduce the rates of suicide and give people hope for the future.

As any charity, Samaritans raise their own funds: we need to keep the lights on, run the phonelines, and train new volunteers to keep the good work going! Please give any money you can - even a few pounds can save a life!
