Story

🚴‍♂️ Cycle for Dundee Parkinson’s Research Campaign 🚴‍♂️

In October 2020, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, which came as a bit of a shock. But I consider myself pretty lucky so far. Now, in my 70th year, four years since my diagnosis, I’ve decided to take on a challenge to help fund vital research.

There’s real hope on the horizon. The Dundee Parkinson’s Research Team at Dundee University has secured tens of millions of dollars in funding from the Michael J. Fox Foundation, helping to drive multiple drug trials worldwide. Right now, Parkinson’s has no cure, and the main medication available has been around since 1967—it only manages symptoms rather than stopping the disease. It’s time for progress.

So, what am I doing about it?

On June 6th, 2025, I’ll be cycling coast to coast—from Annan (West Coast of Scotland) to Cupar (East Coast of Scotland)—alongside nine good friends: Fraser Malcolm, Tom Macaskill, Alistair Paton, John Lang, Ken Lang, Stewart Eldridge, Graeme Hogg, Ian Rankin, and John Salisbury. Over 2.5 days, we’ll cover 160 miles, finishing with a well-earned shower and a pint at Howe of Fife RFC on Sunday, June 8th.

💙 Why?

Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological disease in the world, with 13,000 people in Scotland affected and 30 new diagnoses every week. In the UK, 157,000 people live with the condition. Dundee’s research team, including my consultant Dr. Esther Sammler, is leading the way—but they need funding to keep going.

If you’d like to support, donate, or simply follow our journey, I’d be incredibly grateful. Every penny raised will go directly to the Dundee Parkinson’s Research Campaign. Let’s help fund the research that could change lives.
