Story

We’re taking on the famous Wakefield Hospice 10K to raise money for an incredibly worthy cause. Wakefield Hospice supports patients and families through some of life’s most challenging moments, offering comfort, guidance, and hope when it matters most.

Many of us running the 10k on 22 March 2026; know firsthand how much of a difference the hospice, its staff and all its wraparound support services can make to our loved ones and families when facing life’s biggest battle.

And this year more than ever, I personally want to gather as much support as possible with a team of runners (and some fast walkers!) and raise funds for the Hospice in support of our dearest friend Debs (Doz).

When Debs asked me to help with this challenge of course I was going to say yes! I’ve run this event for many years, smashed some great times, just about made some slightly slower times but without fail I can guarantee Debs has been stood at the brow of the hill (at the end of Shepstye Road) as you reach the halfway point cheering me and every other runner on. Not that Debs isn’t into her sports, but running isn’t and never has been her thing. She’s a netballer and keen frisby fanatic at heart.

So who are we? And why support us?

We’re a team of Debbie’s friends, family and colleagues from far and wide, a group of people who want to show our support and make a difference and raise vital funds for Wakefield Hospice.

We all sincerely hope Debs is there doing the same, cheering us on at the end of Shepstye Road in March; seeing all the team and all participants enjoying the day and raising funds.

Debs was diagnosed with Triple Negative Stage 3 Invasive Breast Cancer in February 2024. In true Holland style she fought the disease with dignity, humour and strength. Following various rounds of treatment (immunotherapy, chemotherapy, surgery & radiotherapy), emotional ups and downs - months later in early September 2024 she was ‘No Evidence of Disease (NED)’ and ‘Complete Pathological Response’ (CPR), with no signs of the cancer that were initially found in the breast, Lymph nodes and neck. She’d well and truly kicked it’s butt.

Heartbreakingly, the reprieve was short and in October 2025 Debs was informed the cancer had spread and metastatic triple negative breast cancer brain mets were evident on her brain. Treatment options are limited and Debs will now put up the hardest fight knowing she will ultimately rely on the care and safe space at Wakefield Hospice in what we believe may be a short period of time.

My best friend Debs.

Our mate Debs.

She is very much loved and her gorgeous family too; husband Andy, daughters Sophie and Libby. We’re all coming together to run for a mate, and support Debs and her family in the name of Wakefield Hospice.

Every step we take will help raise funds to ensure the Hospice can continue providing essential services to support people and families like the Hollands.

Last year, the event raised £136,000, and with your support, we want to help the Hospice aim even higher for 2026! Every donation, however big or small, makes a real difference.

Thank you for visiting our page and for any support you can give!
