Story
Dear Supporter,
This September I am taking part in the Kiltwalk for Clan Childlaw, a charity whose work aligns closely with both my professional experience and my personal commitment to children’s rights.
Children’s legal rights are a deeply rooted issue that deserves far greater awareness. The kilt walk creates that opportunity to raise awareness and funds for a cause I care so deeply about, Clan Childlaw are also marking their 18th anniversary which makes the walk particularly meaningful.
As a Chair Panel Member for Children’s Hearings Scotland, I have experienced first hand the importance of ensuring that children in Scotland are genuinely listened to, understood and supported when decisions are being made about their lives. It is vital that we create space for children to express their views and ensure that their voices are not lost within the systems intended to protect them.
Alongside having the privilege of working with Children’s Hearings Scotland, I returned to education in my 30s and am currently undertaking my LLB Law degree at university, with the goal of becoming a solicitor. Alongside my studies, I also work within a law firm, gaining valuable experience and insight into the legal profession and how children’s rights are vital to be upheld.
Throughout being exposed to these networks within our legal system, my educational and professional experience have come to identify that sadly, many children and young people in Scotland don’t have the resources or knowledge to protect or enforce their rights. This is where the incredible work of Clan Childlaw comes into practice.
I have a passion for advocating for children. For me, It means more than simply listening. It means understanding their individual circumstances, respecting their rights, supporting their voice and ensuring they have the vital access to the legal knowledge and representation they need.
That is why I am proud to support Clan Childlaw. Their free, child centred legal advice and representation helps children and young people understand and exercise their legal rights, have their voices heard and access justice. Their work also contributes to improving the systems, policies and practices that affect children across Scotland.
If you are able to support my fundraising, I would be incredibly grateful. Even as little as £1 can go an incredible way. Every donation helps Clan Childlaw continue providing vital support to children and young people across Scotland.
I am proud to stand up for children’s rights, committed to advocating for their voices, and passionate about ensuring that every child is treated with the dignity, respect and fairness they deserve.
Thank you
Ruth
