Story
Hi everyone,
My name is Sam, and on Friday 9th August I’ll be taking on something I never imagined I’d do — a wing‑walk on a vintage Boeing Stearman biplane at Sywell Aerodrome, reaching speeds of up to 120mph while strapped to the top of the aircraft. The experience includes zoom climbs, dives, steep turns and low‑level fly‑pasts.
I’m doing this to raise money for NASS (National Axial Spondyloarthritis Society) and our local NASS Bristol branch, where I’ve been a member for 28 years. The support, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and community have made a huge difference to my life.
Why NASS matters to me
I live with Axial Spondyloarthritis (AxSpA) — a long‑term inflammatory condition that usually begins in early adulthood and causes chronic back pain, stiffness, fatigue and inflammation in the spine, pelvis and other joints. It can also affect the eyes, gut and tendons, and in some cases the spine can gradually fuse over time.
There’s currently no cure, but with the right treatment, exercise and support, people can stay active and live full lives. NASS has been there for me throughout my journey — providing expert guidance, physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and a community of people who understand exactly what it’s like.
Why I’m fundraising
I want to give something back to both the National Society and our local Bristol branch, so all donations will be split between the two. Your support will help:
Fund national research, education and advocacy
Support our Bristol hydrotherapy sessions
Provide help for people newly diagnosed
Improve long‑term management of this lifelong condition
How you can help
If you’re able to donate — any amount, large or small — it will make a real difference.
And if you can’t donate, sharing this page would be hugely appreciated.
Thank you for supporting me, supporting NASS, and supporting everyone living with Axial Spondyloarthritis.
Sam
