Here's a bit more about why I chose the run for the Refugee Forum ...

Refugee support is something very close to my heart. My grandfather—whom I sadly never had the chance to meet—was a refugee himself. As a German of Jewish heritage, he was forced to flee Nazi Germany when he was no longer granted a state license to work. He found refuge here in the UK, which gave him the chance to rebuild his life.

In recent years, I’ve been involved in supporting young asylum seekers in Leicester by providing after-school science tuition. Meeting these incredible young people, who have faced immense adversity, has only deepened my belief in the importance of offering refuge to those fleeing persecution.

Leaving one’s home is never easy, but being a refugee in the UK today seems harder than ever. Some of the recent events and rhetoric around refugees have deeply saddened me and strengthened my resolve to stand in solidarity with them. It’s more important than ever that these individuals know they are welcome and supported in Britain.
