June is Scoliosis Awareness Month
AIS Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis is the most common type of scoliosis in children effecting 2-4% of children during their pre teen and teen years, where the spine grows in a curved and rotated way. Clinical audits demonstrate that in the UK only around 10% of children are diagnosed while the curve(s) are small enough for conservative treatment, in Europe its around 20-30%. This discrepancy is largely if not totally due to awareness in the general population and in general practice of effective treatment options for smaller curves. Conservative treatment has been proven to be effective at reducing the chance of surgery and bracing recommended by the BSS (British Scoliosis Society) "All patients with AIS with curves 20-40 degrees, Risser 0-2 (significant growth potential) and apex below T7 should be offered brace treatment. The evidence from the BrAIST Study shows that 72% of braced patients avoid curve progression to 50 degrees (a surrogate marker of surgery) whilst only 48% of non-braced patients avoid surgery"
This year a group of technicians, CAD designer and Clinicians Specialists have got together to raise awareness of scoliosis and the fantastic work Scoliosis Support and Research do in raising awareness and supporting patients and their families.
They will be doing a walk in the Peak District taking in Mam Tor and the Blue Johns Cavern area on the 28th of June
