Story
1 in 3 people will have an Acquired Brain Injury at some point in their lives - we want to help give people the best possible chance of recovery.
SameYou works to increase access to recovery for young adults after leaving hospital and to facilitate innovations in specialist nurse training, fund clinical research and develop evidence for policy change.
Our long-term vision is to work with neurorehabilitation leaders to develop a blueprint for a new type of neuro-recovery centre helping people find their way to recovery.
My Story:
I remember when I was six I hit my head on the gym floor at school really hard and after that I had headaches every afternoon and threw up every day for about two months after. This taught me that the brain is basically just the stomach of the head.
One spring break in High School I ended up getting really bad traveller’s diarrhea. My plan had been to ask my high school crush to Prom on that trip. But my intestines had other plans. Coming home from Mexico I was trying desperately not to explode from both ends while girls in the car kept singing the only part of The Spice Girls’ Wannabe that they could remember. I can tell you what I really really wanted… a bathroom… and an implement of murder. Needless to say while I was home recovering, some other taller, better-looking guy swooped in and asked her out. She went to The Prom with him.
Had Same You existed, and its founder not been 10 years old, and had it been traveller’s diarrhea of the brain, after I was done destroying a toilet (of the brain?), SameYou could have been guiding me to sweet talk my crush like Cyrano de Bergerac, I could have gone to Prom dressed like James Bond, or at least dressed like a waiter at a fancy soiree, and I could have scored my first kiss with tongue (who am I kidding, a chaste hug was probably my ceiling.)
So they actually help with therapy post injury. So I guess in my story they would undermine my crush’s relationship with that taller, handsomer guy so I could steal her back. Or they would lend financial support to existing organizations that already do that... The metaphor is breaking down.
What I’m Doing: 31km in 31 days of March.
I like to walk some mornings. I’m told a kilometer is essentially like a mile in England. I read somewhere that England is the size of South Carolina, which as one of the 50 states is exactly 1/50 the size of the United States. The US is 3,796,742 square miles. England is 132,932 square kilometers.
Showing my Math:
So South Carolina is 3,796,742 / 50 = 75,934.84
The British Pound was equal to $1.2240125452 a few years ago…
75,934.84 x $1.2240125452 = 92,945.196774
I visited England once in 1997 and had a layover in Heathrow in 1999. A difference of 2 years.
92,945.196774 / 2 = 46,472.598387
I think Pi (3 and a bit) is probably involved somewhere in here…
46,472.598387 x 3 = 139,417.79516
139,417.79516 / 132,932 = 1.0487903226
Maybe the Pi is squared in area… and a square has 4 sides…
1.0487903226 / 3 = 0.3495967742; 0.3495967742 + 4 = 4.3495967742
31 Days of walking.
4.3495967742 x 31 = 134.8375
There are 7 days in a week.
134.8375/7 = 19.2625
Ok, so I’ll need to walk 19.2625 miles in 31 days. Can attempt!
Edit - The Rest of the Story (For the curious):
I was diagnosed with a concussion and the headaches were migraines that I have had regularly for the rest of my life. Fortunately over the past 40 years the frequency has decreased to once every couple of weeks and caffeine helps manage the pain (no idea why). I always keep some Dr. Pepper, or other caffeinated soda, on hand for when one hits.
As far as my high school crush goes, she married an amazing man (not me) and he is one of the best people I have ever met and is a way better match for her than I ever would have been. I got to attend their wedding! It was awesome! They are happy and I am thrilled for them.
The Travellers Diarrhea, with the help of medicine and pedialite, cleared up in a few days and has never darkened my bowels since. I like to think it went on to bigger and better things, maybe it got a degree or is a social media influencer somewhere.
