Story

Save St Andrew’s Thornhill Square!

You may have seen nets, scaffolding and stonemasons on St Andrew’s Church, Thornhill Square recently. Many people have been working there to keep the building safe.

But the spire of this local landmark has very severe structural problems. The building now urgently needs a million pounds to save it for the community. With more needed in future.

Thank you for visiting the Just Giving page – you can help.

St Andrew’s is a much loved local landmark, a community hub, and a place of worship. But all this is now at risk.

Over the last five years, £400,000 has been raised from generous local donors, including many individuals and Islington's own Cloudesley Trust. This has enabled urgent repairs - some temporary, some permanent - to keep the building safe and open. We now need to raise a further £300,000 for the spire.

Please do donate, whether you can give 10s, 100s or 1000s, your support is vital.

Please enter your donation amount and Gift Aid details if you are a taxpayer. Gift Aid means we can collect more money, at no cost to you.

If you would like to know more, here is some background:

St Andrew’s was built 170 years ago. Age and decay have taken their toll and early 20th century repairs caused harm. Repairs are needed urgently to the tower and spire, stonework and to deal with subsidence. Inside, you can see cracks in the arch in the centre of the church and running from top to bottom of the beautiful stained glass window. Historic England has put St Andrew’s in the most serious category (A) of its Heritage At Risk register.

Fundraising efforts from the congregation, local trusts and major grants have made it possible to keep the spire safe and the building open, and enabled long term repairs to the north side in 2024 and, in 2025, the Caledonian Road side. Experienced external consultants are in place, along with a Building Committee to oversee project development.

Full repairs to the spire and tower can wait no longer. The building urgently needs a million pounds to save it.

The whole project will need £3-5 million over several years to complete repairs, update essential facilities and redesign the interior space so it is a safe and beautiful place for you, your family and the community for the next 170 years.

We all know that beautiful Barnsbury is a special part of London: a place that people care about. Architecturally, the building is the elegant heart of leafy Thornhill Square. The spire is visible for miles around. But it is also at the heart of our community and today, St Andrew’s hosts:

• a Montessori nursery

• a warm space and other help groups

• kids’ drama lessons

• concerts and talks

• a parent and toddler Stay ‘n’ Play

• rehearsal space for a local orchestra

• a weekly clothes and toy recycle, private parties and more

• As well as being a working place of worship.

St Andrew’s is needed now as much as it has ever been. But its future is at serious risk. We must all work together to save it.

Please do donate, whether you can give 10s or 100s, your support is vital and appreciated by many.
