We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

Our brother, uncle, and friend Steve Morrissey sadly passed away in October 2023 from glioblastoma after recently turning 50 . Inexplicably, a few weeks before Steve’s untimely death, Ali - the mother of their thirteen-year-old daughter – also sadly lost her battle with a brain tumour.

Steve was born in London but grew up and lived in Bury St Edmunds for the best part of 40 years. During the latter stages of his illness and following the death of Ali, Steve and his daughter embarked on their final journey together, to Cullompton in Devon, where they settled with Steve’s sister and her family.

On Thursday 6th June a group of Steve’s friends and family, will be commemorating Steve’s final journey by cycling from Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk to Cullompton in Devon to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet historically just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. Glioblastomas are a fast-growing type of brain tumour and are the most common type of malignant brain tumour in adults, with a devastatingly short average survival time of <6 months if untreated and only 12-18 months with an intensive and invasive treatment plan. Brain Tumour Research is the only national charity in the UK focused on finding a cure for all types of brain tumours through campaigning to increase the national investment in brain tumour research to £35 million per year, while fundraising to create a network of seven sustainable Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence across the UK.

Whilst we’re not anticipating breaking any land speed records, we are aiming to complete the 280 miles over four days, finishing in Cullompton on Sunday afternoon.

Many thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. It goes without saying that we’d be hugely appreciative of any donations you are able to make.
