Story

Sailing Forward – Sue’s Full Circle Journey ⛵

After surviving multiple sclerosis, breast cancer, and the loss of the career I loved, I’ve been given the chance to sail the second leg of 2,000 nautical miles around the UK — proving that illness does not define the limits of our lives.

I began my life of service in 1975 when I joined the Army as WRAC Provost. After leaving the forces, I raised my daughter as a single mum before later joining the police service, where I proudly served for 19 years.

Sadly, my career was cut short when I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and other health issues that forced my retirement. Later, I was also diagnosed with breast cancer. These challenges made me realise just how precious life really is.

My father, who was also a police officer, died from cancer at the young age of 48. He loved sailing, and through him I discovered my own love of the sea. Being near the water has always reminded me of him and the adventurous spirit he carried through life.

This year in April I have the incredible opportunity to take part in the Full Circle Expedition, a 12-week, 2,000-nautical-mile voyage around the UK aboard a tall ship with over 70 wounded, injured, and sick veterans and serving personnel.

Together we will sail to 22 ports around the UK, meeting communities along the way and raising the Invictus Games flag ahead of the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027.

This voyage isn’t just about sailing. It’s about rebuilding confidence, rediscovering purpose, and reconnecting with the camaraderie that many of us have missed since leaving the forces.

Why Your Support Matters

Despite the health challenges I still live with and the medication I take every day, I am determined to take part in this life-changing journey.

Your support will help make this possible and will mean more than just helping me step aboard a tall ship. It will help me honour my father’s memory, reconnect with the spirit of service that has shaped my life, and prove that even after life’s hardest battles, new adventures are still waiting on the horizon. All donations will go towards Turn to Starboard, who want to purchase another yacht that will enable them to help more veterans.

Thank you.

Every donation, no matter the size, brings more veterans one step closer to the sea.

With your support, I hope to show that resilience, courage, and determination are stronger than any diagnosis. 🌊
