Story
I’m taking part in the Great North Run on Sunday 8th September 2024 to raise vital funds for Endometriosis UK. There are 1.5 million with endometriosis in the UK, and too many are suffering in silence. I am 1 in 10 who are diagnosed and living with this condition. I want to raise money to help fund Endometriosis UK’s support groups, information provision and helpline. It’s time to campaign for change, fairer treatment and eventually a cure for endometriosis!
Why am I doing this?
This year marks 10 years since my diagnosis and surgery for endometriosis. At just 19 years old and after 5 years of endless appointments, hospital stays, scans and tests, I finally got my diagnosis. This in itself can be the biggest battle we face as sufferers of this condition, as its symptoms are so regularly misunderstood, misdiagnosed and even at times disregarded. The average diagnosis time has just reached an all time high of 8 years and 10 months. Being diagnosed is the first hurdle, but living and managing my condition is something I have to do everyday as there is no cure for it. Due to my surgery and ongoing treatment I am able live an active lifestyle and that is something I want to celebrate by running the Great North Run.
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis (pronounced en-doh–mee–tree–oh–sis) is the name given to the condition where cells similar to the ones in the lining of the womb (uterus) are found elsewhere in the body. These cells react to the menstrual cycle each month and also bleed. However, there is no way for this blood to leave the body. This can cause inflammation, pain and the formation of scar tissue. It is a chronic and often debilitating condition that can cause painful periods, painful sex and pelvic pain outside of periods. It may also lead to infertility, fatigue and bowel and bladder problems. It can cause the inability to fulfil work and social commitments leading to depression and isolation.
However, with the right endometriosis treatment, many of these issues can be addressed, and the symptoms of endometriosis made more manageable.
