Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
If you'd asked me seven years ago whether I'd ever run a marathon I would have wet myself laughing; I couldn't have run half a mile let alone a twenty six of them. My husband Andy was the crazy one that jumped out of planes, climbed mountains, and scuba dived to silly depths; I was still hobbling about after an awkward incident involving a paraglider, a tree, and several orthopaedic surgeons.
A lot can change in a few short years.
In 2019 Andy noticed something wrong with his legs, and during the months of poking and prodding by the medical profession that followed we decided we needed to work on our fitness together. I ran my first 5k with him during lockdown, and my first 10k race with him in 2022.
Sadly, my first 10k was Andy's last 10k. His legs got worse and he started falling over. 5k runs on a Saturday morning got slower, harder, and eventually, impossible. This year he has had to give up working as a GP and he is now using a wheelchair, but I have carried on running for both of us.
Andy is looked after by an incredible team of neurologists, physios and occupational therapists at the National Hospital for Neurology, in London. He has a rare genetic illness called Hereditary Spastic Paraparesis (HSP). There is so much we don't know about this illness and, sadly, there is no treatment at present. I am running the London Marathon in 2026 to raise money to fund research into research that may one day beat this awful condition.
