Shelter exists to defend the right to a safe home for all. All across the UK, Shelter supports millions of people every year who face housing emergencies through their advice, support and legal services. Shelter provides advice on a number of topics from homelessness, council housing, mortgage repossession, eviction issues, tenancy deposits, benefits and money problems etc.

Did you know that there are no national figures for how many people are homeless in the UK because each region records it differently? Or that people experiencing homelessness do not show up in official statistics at all?

On any given night, tens of thousands of families and individuals are experiencing the worst forms of homelessness across Great Britain. This includes more than 200,000 households in England alone.

When I was a child , my family and I found ourselves without somewhere to live and it was Shelter who stepped in to support us. Shelter provided us with advice, guidance and a warm place to live so we could figure out our next steps and continue living as normally as we possibly could. My sister and I were able to continue going to school and we were able to get back on our feet with Shelter's support. Without this, it is difficult to say what could have happened to us.

Living in Shelter accommodation as a child has always stayed with me, and it is why I have decided to join them on their final walk of the Step For Change campaign on Saturday 16th March 2024 in Felixstowe.

Shelter continues to work hard to change the system and to also fight for a fairer future of housing. At Shelter Norfolk, an incredible amount of work is done to offer face to face advice for people experiencing housing issues and homelessness, legal services, and campaigning for better housing rights.
