Story
The Challenge
As the old adage goes, golf’s a “good walk ruined”. Well, we’re taking that to the extreme on Sunday the 29th June with 100 Holes in a day.
Five and an half rounds of golf, starting just after four in the morning and finishing in the early evening. 22 miles of walking, carrying throughout the day, totalling about 46,000 steps.
The Charities
Weirdly, this isn’t for our own enjoyment but is to raise money for two amazing charities - The Mary How Trust and Cancerwise, who are the Club Captains’ chosen charities for the year.
The Mary How Trust is a local West Sussex charity who focus on the early detection and treatment of cancers, named after Mary who died early from bowel cancer that could have been treatable had it been detected earlier
Cancerwise are another West Sussex charity. They provide support for patients and their network of family, friends and carers at every stage of their cancer journey.
Any and all support is massively welcome, and hugely appreciated by us, the Captains and the charities.
The History of the Challenge
About 16 years ago, a small group of golfers from West Sussex Golf Club played 100 holes in a day to raise money for charity. Over the following 5 years, they increased the challenge so that in the last year, they played over 200 holes in a 24 hour period. This was to be their last hurrah.
However, Russell Barton who came up with the initial idea and played in every challenge sadly passed away and another regular player, Patrick Curry succumbed to Covid. So, some of the original team decided to do it again and open it out to the broader membership of the club in 2022 and play for the Barton trophy. Such was the success of the day, we are repeating the Challenge in 2025.
