Story
Walking 5987 Miles sounds impossible right?! It is for Cado!
So, we will walk and be wheeled a Mile a Day each in May for the charity we work for-SFAC.
Why 5987 miles? That's the distance from Leeds, UK to Sao Paulo Brazil where the SFAC seed was planted by their founder, Mick Pease, and his wife Brenda whilst in Brazil.
And, I (Dan) was there last month where we could see the impact of SFAC's work. In 2002 few people had heard of foster care and there was hardly any foster care programmes. In March 1300 people attended a national foster care conference where Mick and I were invited speakers. 5% of children living away from parents are now in formal foster care placements instead of large institutions. SFAC have trained one of the leading foster care organisations in Brazil, now supporting others develop foster care. They have a target of 20% in two years. There obstacle to acheiving this is getting the judiciary to understand the benefits of foster care instead of children's homes. SFAC is now working with Brazil organisations to train the judiciary and further support family care.
But SFAC does not only work in Brazil. SFAC works to transform child care and protection systems all over the world. Theyve worked with organisations (governments, judiciaries, and charities of all shapes and sizes!) in 49 countries so far.
I'd love you to support my walking by making a donation!
