The Hiking Organist: Walking and Playing for the Future of Choral Music, supporting young musicians at Leeds Minster.

Alex Woodrow is raising money for The Friends of the Music of Leeds Minster

A 104-mile walk of the Yorkshire White Rose Way, over six days in July 2026, giving a daily organ recital at churches along the route, to raise money for the Choral Scholar programme at Leeds Minster.

Friends of the Music of Leeds Minster exists to support and sustain the musical life of Leeds Minster. Music is at the heart of the Minster’s worship and community life, expressed most fully through its choral tradition and historic organ. The Friends help ensure this continues, supporting services, concerts, and wider musical activity throughout the year. A key focus of this work is supporting young musicians through choral scholarships. Students from the Universities of Leeds and York and Leeds Conservatoire sing regularly in the Minster Choir, gaining valuable training and experience within a structured musical environment. Their contribution is essential to maintaining the quality and continuity of the choir. This work depends on ongoing support. The costs of training young singers, maintaining musical standards, and sustaining weekly worship are significant. Donations help ensure that choral music remains at the heart of life at the Minster — supporting young musicians today and helping to secure the future of church music in Leeds.

6 days – 104 miles – 6 recitals

About the Challenge

My name is Alex, and I am the Organist at Leeds Minster. In July 2026, I will embark upon an inspiring journey: walking 104 miles over 6 days, the longest walk of my life, from Leeds to Scarborough, following the White Rose Way. Along the way, I will give 6 organ recitals, raising awareness and vital funds for the next generation of young musicians at Leeds Minster. This challenge is not only a test of endurance but a unique celebration of music, community, and the beautiful landscapes of Yorkshire. Whether you join me for a stage of the walk, attend a recital, or support from afar, every step helps create opportunities for talented young people.

About the Choral Scholars

The Choral Scholars of Leeds Minster are dedicated young musicians who perform a demanding programme of choral music in three choral services each week. Their experience at Leeds Minster goes well beyond musical performance: through rigorous training and mentoring, these scholars develop invaluable musical and professional skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Supporting them ensures not only that the rich tradition of choral music continues to flourish here at Leeds Minster but equips these young people with musical and professional skills for life which will impact upon other choirs and communities long after their time here, offering inspiration to both performers and audiences alike.
