Story
Our Challenge
This year, the three of us, Thom, Jake and Jack, are taking on a double challenge to raise money for Matthew’s House.
Matthew’s House is a welcoming building in the heart of Swansea, serving the homeless and vulnerable. It offers hospitality and hope to all, regardless of background, beliefs or circumstances. It is an inclusive space with a pay as you feel café, laundry facilities, showers, and other essential support. Everything given goes directly to Matthew’s House and the people it serves.
This challenge is personal.
It has been 18 months since our mum, Sally, passed away. For Thom, February was the first time getting back into the gym and running since losing her. It has not been easy.
Jake then had the bright idea of signing us up to HYROX Doubles, which is honestly terrifying. But we can both picture Mum saying, “you stupid pair, what are you up to now?” and that makes it exactly the kind of challenge worth doing.
We are doing this to remember her, and to support a project that meant so much to her and gave her real purpose for many years.
Jake also has some unfinished business. Last year, he fainted at the 17km mark during the Swansea Half Marathon while on track for a personal best. So this year is redemption.
Thom is hoping to get through HYROX and the Swansea Half and then retire gracefully from both. He loves fitness about as much as he loves pickled onions.
Jack has been a rock for our family. He will be pushing for another personal best in the Swansea Half while also making sure Thom and Jake actually make it through both events.
Together, we are a team. The training has started. The wind ups have started. The supplements are flowing. The injuries are probably coming.
The Events
HYROX Doubles on 30 April at the Principality Stadium
Swansea Half Marathon on the first Sunday in June in Swansea
Why It Matters
We are doing this in memory of our mum, Sally, and in support of Matthew’s House and the incredible work it does in the community every single week.
If you can, please support us by donating. Every contribution helps provide food, dignity, connection and hope to people who need it most.
Thank you so much.
