Story
This year, I’m running the Great Birmingham Half Marathon in memory of my father-in-law, John; a funny, caring and deeply thoughtful man who meant so much to us.
John was a true family man. During COVID, he joined my first ever online yoga classes. That quiet show of support meant everything and perfectly captured who he was.
In 2019, John was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumour, and was given just 12-18 months to live. It was an incredibly frightening time, but he faced it with pure Yorkshire grit, strength and dignity. John sadly passed away in May 2023.
Glioblastoma kills more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer, yet receives just 1% of national cancer research funding. More must be done.
I’m running as part of John’s Crew to raise money for Brain Tumour Research, funding vital research and raising awareness. I’ve seen first-hand the incredible work being done to find better treatments and, one day, a cure.
I’ll be close to a year postpartum on race day, and training with a baby hasn’t been easy, but that challenge is nothing compared to what John faced.
When it gets tough, I’ll think of his strength, his humour, and his determination to just get on with it. He loved watching the London Marathon on the telly so I know he’ll be cheering me on.
I’m running in his honour.
For families living day by day.
For better treatments, more research, and hope.
If you’re able to donate, thank you, it would mean the world to us ❤️.
