Story
Bikes and support for inclusive community living is coming full circle.
Bringing my passion for bicycles together with Newton Dee’s transition towards more active and sustainable ways of inclusive living with adults with special needs has been a big part of my life over the last year: Opportunities to train as a bike mechanic and practice my learned skills in community bike repair sessions and maintaining Newton Dee’s fleet of adaptive bikes. Learning group ride leader skills and undertaking outdoor pursuits – the Kilt Walk being one of them - as well as organising test rides of the adaptive bikes at Newton Dee’s Summer Festival 2025. It has been very fulfilling and exciting to see
Support for these endeavours and the resurgence of the momentum around cycling in Newton Dee has been revived thanks to the support from the Health Improvement Fund by the Health and Social Care Partnership of the Aberdeen City Council and NHS Grampian and cycling.uk with funding from NESTrans:
CyclingUK: How adapted bikes are transforming daily life in an Aberdeen community
The support of the fellow community members living and working in the Newton Dee Camphill Community has been tremendous and will be a major motivation to embark on this adventure.
Joining a quad of riders to master the Strathpuffer as a team while raising funds for Newton Dee is going to be rewarding and challenging at the same time. As a team we will take turns to ride this notorious 24hour endurance race in the Scottish Highlands during the tough winter conditions in January 2026.
“Freezing temperatures. 17 hours of darkness. Miles upon miles of gruelling terrain, a brutal mix of ice, wind, hail, rain, mud and snow and maybe, just maybe, a glorious Scottish winter sunrise.
Mountain bike Challenges don’t come much tougher or more rewarding than the Strathpuffer.
The legendary 24 hour mountain bike endurance event held every year in the Highlands of Scotland in the middle of winter.” (Strathpuffer Organisers)
