1000 Miles for Great Ormond Street Hospital

1000 Miles from Okehampton to Santiago de Compostela · 29 June 2024
With my 16 year old son George, I will be cycling over 1000 miles from Okehampton to Santiago de Compostela (Spain).
We will be setting off from Okehampton train station at 11am on the 29/6/24, heading down the Granite Way before catching the ferry from Plymouth to Roscoff.
Please help support the ride: we are raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital, who have been looking after my 6 year old nephew (George's cousin) Wilf during his ongoing treatment for the rare condition Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD). In a nutshell, it is a genetic disorder which prevents the immune system from fighting infection. Wilf was diagnosed a couple of years ago when he contracted pneumonia. Under the amazing care of GOSH at the beginning of this year, he underwent a course of Chemotherapy, followed by a bone marrow transplant to get him started with a new immune system. He is now recovering well at home, and fingers crossed, will be able to return to school in September.
Unfortunately, when GOSH were looking for his bone marrow donor, they also discovered that Wilf's older sister, Iris, has the same condition. This means that she will need to go through exactly the same treatment in the near future at GOSH.
