Steps for Addison's Awareness · 1 February 2025 to 28 February 2025 ·

From 1 - 28 February, step up and take on our virtual walking (or running) fundraising challenge to represent the challenging journey faced by many living with Addison’s and adrenal insufficiency.

Story

I will be walking or running 150km through the month of February 2025, in support of the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group. Please support me if you are able to do so!

My wife, Rachel, was diagnosed with Addison’s disease in 2018 after a first crisis that forced her to stay in hospital for almost three weeks. Although she has grown accustomed to managing the disease – expertly juggling medications and limited energy resources with teaching, parenting and dancing - it remains a constant factor that we need to be vigilant against every day.

As a rare disease, Addison’s is not as well researched or understood as other conditions. Rachel regularly needs to explain the illness and its associated risks, e.g. to colleagues, friends, and medical practitioners. And patients with Addison’s do not have access to the same advanced treatment options available to others, leaving them with a daily battle managing medications, monitoring their stress levels, etc. More research and more awareness is needed to help Rachel and other Addison’s patients like her.

That’s why I’m proud to be taking 'Steps for Addison's Awareness' from 1 - 28 February to raise awareness and funds for the Addison's Disease Self-Help Group (ADSHG).

Since receiving the diagnosis, the ADSHG has been a great source of moral support and information for Rachel. Living with a rare disease can be lonely, since it can be difficult or impossible to connect with other patients and build local communities unless you live in a very densely populated area. Through the ADSHG forum, Rachel has been able to chat with other people living with Addison’s disease, share experiences, and learn more about how other people manage their treatment. It is a great source of moral support during the more difficult phases, and a strong advocate for and supporter of research into the disease and its treatment.

The ADSHG charity supports everyone affected by Addison's and adrenal insufficiency. Addison’s is a rare endocrine condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones and can be life-threatening. It affects approximately 1 in 10,000 people and is roughly 300 times rarer than diabetes.

Every donation will go directly towards the Addison’s Disease Self-Help Group’s mission of supporting the Addison's and adrenal insufficiency community and their healthcare providers as well as supporting vital research. Together, we can make a real difference.

Every penny raised helps us support people affected by Addison's disease and adrenal insufficiency.
