In February 2025, I had coffee with Business Development&Bloodstock Consultant Su-Ann Khaw and star racing TV presenter Lizzie Jelfs in Melbourne. As we chatted about horses and racing, Lizzie shared her journey of competing in the Magnolia Cup. Her story inspired me to submit my application on the spot. It wasn’t just the excitement and glamour of race day that drew me in, but also the sheer hard work behind the scenes.

Before I started training, I knew it would be tough, but I never realized just how tough. Early mornings riding out in the dark, regardless of sun, rain, or wind. The level of fitness, technique, and confidence required sets racing apart from other sports I did before. Riders need both physical strength and mental resilience. Horses are unpredictable every day, and you will face your share of setbacks. Being resilient is key and that’s what keeps both people and horses going further in their journeys.

I’ve worked in the horse industry for nearly 14 years, and I’ve met so many incredible horsepersons especially some horsewomen who serve in different roles across this global community. Without their daily dedication and hard work, we couldn’t enjoy the thrill of racing or make a living from it. Through this opportunity, I want to pay tribute to these resilient women who help make our industry great.

The 2026 Markel Magnolia Cup will raise vital funds to support girls’ empowerment around the world through education and economic opportunity.

When a girl is given the chance to learn, she gains the power to shape her own future, and to lift her family and community with her.

Through the work of Education Above All Foundation, we support girls by:

• Providing access to education for out of school children

• Expanding access to finance for young female entrepreneurs

• Providing skills training for decent jobs and livelihoods
