Colleagues are taking part in the Edinburgh Kiltwalk to raise money to purchase venepuncture equipment for use within the Anne Rowling Clinic.

Story

The Anne Rowling Clinic delivers clinical care and research to improve the lives of people with degenerative conditions affecting the brain. Its researchers and clinicians study the following neurological conditions:

multiple sclerosis (MS)

motor neurone disease (MND)

Parkinson's disease (PD) and movement disorders

Huntington's disease

stroke due to brain haemorrhage cognitive disorders (problems with memory, language, thinking and understanding)

The AccuVein is a portable handheld machine that helps staff locate patients’ veins for blood test samples. It can – for some patients – take several attempts to find a suitable vein, which can be uncomfortable for patients and can’t be much fun for the nurses either! Clinic staff want to make the process as easy as possible and think the AccuVein will increase venepuncture and cannulation success rates by helping clinical staff take blood first time.

I have been in contact with The Anne Rowling Clinic staff and they have trialled one and are suitably impressed and feel this would impact positively on venepuncture and cannulation success rates. A group of staff from the Anne Rowling Clinic are taking part in the Edinburgh Kiltwalk to raise funds towards the equipment too.
