Tsavo in Kenya is one of the last great wildernesses. It is also home to some of the last remaining “big tuskers”—majestic elephants with tusks weighing over 100lbs (45kg) on each side. There are fewer than 25 big tuskers left on Earth and the majority reside in Tsavo.

Keeping the big tuskers safe in a vast area the size of Switzerland is a considerable challenge. Tsavo Trust's "Big Tusker Programme" aims to secure the future of these iconic elephants before they are lost to poaching and habitat loss. By protecting these elephants, the programme is effectively providing a layer of security for all other wildlife in the area as well.

In 2017, I had the privilege of working on an 18-month project in collaboration with Tsavo Trust. They helped me document the awe-inspiring elephants and with the resulting photographs I produced a coffee table book to support their cause.

Tusk works with its project partners to find sustainable solutions to preserve critical habitats, protect endangered species, combat the illegal wildlife trade, empower local communities and promote environmental education. Tusk has supported the Tsavo Trust's Big Tusker Programme since 2016, enabling the aerial patrols to track and protect the elephant population. Tusk have generously allocated one of their precious 2024 London Marathon slots to me so that I can run for Tsavo.
