Story

Supporting the Support Staff

Writers assistants, PAs, and coordinators are an essential part of the screenwriting industry, and they are just as affected by the WGA Strike as writers themselves. These support staff workers–many of whom will make up the next generation of Guild writers–make so much happen behind the scenes with little fanfare.

The Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund has been relaunched by the Entertainment Community Fund to help address the needs of support staffers during the work stoppage. The fund originally launched during the COVID-19 pandemic and ended up raising over $500,000 of financial aid for support staffers.

Support staff jobs are the elemental step to a career in film and television, and the first three years are incredibly important. They’re times of learning, connection, and growing into who you will be as a member of the industry, but those years also include low pay, long hours, and sacrifice. Work stoppages interrupt a new professional’s trajectory and, when coupled with the daily lack of support and resources, can mean the end of a career. The Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund is not just a resource; it’s a lifeline.

-Alex Rubin, quoted in The Hollywood Reporter

Please contribute whatever you can to make sure that any support staffer on strike can get the financial assistance they need. All money raised by Word by Word for the Hollywood Support Staff Relief Fund will go directly to any support staffers in need of assistance.
