Story

Last updated 21st June 2008

Target Acheived  (But please feel free to donate some more, site open until 17th July).

Thank You Very much. Please watch the new UTube clip.

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

2007 has thrown at me more challenges than I could ever have expected. This year I have, in several guises, lost many friends who have left a large void in my heart. The nearest & dearest of which was my MUM

Therefore I have decided to do something in her memory. The memory of Heather Groves, who touched the hearts of so many people.

My mum suffered from Asthma, so you may ask yourself why have I chosen to raise funds for Macmillan cancer support. Those of you who knew Heather will remember how loving and caring she was, always there for everyone even if it was just to listen. Just like the wonderful people at Macmillan's. Please visit their site to find out more at www.macmillan.org.uk . Also most of us have been touched by someone close who has suffered or even died from cancer.

I had the great idea to try and beat the challenges life throws at me by choosing one myself.

Therefore after completing the Robin Hood marathon in a time of 3:45:32 on 16th September 2007 I thought about London, but my time was not good enough for the good for age category (32 seconds out, their loss). So what could challenge me......?

The Great Wall of China marathon. Not only the full 26.2 miles but to add a bit of interest how about incorporating 3700 steps..

The marathon takes place 17th may 2008 and to keep me on my toes my training will include the Paris 1/2 marathon on 2nd March and one week later Ballycotton 10 (10 miles in the beautiful county of Cork).

All costs for the race entries, travel , training etc have been paid by myself therefore ALL funds raised on and off line will go to Macmillans cancer support, AND my employer, RBS have a scheme which can match some of the funds I raise. All the more for charity.

Please give generously

I will be pounding the streets of Liverpool for many a mile, so if anyone wants me to wear their logo on my running gear give me a shout by sending an email to corsicanpam@btinternet.com  I am sure we can come to an agreeable arrangement (as long as the Macmillan's get more funds).

If anyone has any training tips, advice or just wants to know how I am getting on I will be updating this page with any news or you could email me at corsicanpam@btinternet.com  . Any help fund raising will be appreciated.

If you would like to find out more about the race visit to their site http://www.great-wall-marathon.com/ and let me know what you think.

Donating through this site is simple fast and totally secure, (Just click on the 'sponsor me now' button at the top or bottom of this page and follow the instructions). It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Macmillan Cancer Support will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Anyone who wants to donate, but not online, can give me cash or a cheque next time they see me ;-)

Many thanks for your support, and a special thanks to the friends who have helped me get through this year. Lets hope next year brings less tears & more smiles

Love

Pam Morgan

Thanks to all those who have given cash to me recently and a BIG Thank you to my Dads friends at the "Marconi O.B.'s club" who gave me a total of £80 on Monday night (keep looking after my dad for me). I promised I would put your names in lights, so here goes ;~

Peter Wass, Doug Mallard, Stewart Reynolds, Brian Tasker, Ken Francis, Dave Morris & Fred Groves (that's my dad, I could forget him)    ................... Some more names, Brian McCormick & Neighbours from Chester Road.

I also want to give a big thank you to everyone in the RBS who must be totally fed up of my fund raising:- abseiling, dressdown days, MARATHON, sponsored jail break (well maybe thats next). You have helped me so much and showed so much interest. thanks again

First update 18th December 2007 ~ 150 days to go. Help!!!!!!

13th January ~124 days to go. I have been training hard and I am a little bit tired. I Have been keeping a Training log since New Years day if any one would like to see it send me an e-mail and I will forward it to you.

I haven't been pushing for donations yet because I know Christmas is very expensive  Although you cant use that excuse for ever. ~more updates to come

Look after yourselves and remember to pass on this page by using the  promote this page link at the top of this page.

8th February ~ 98 days to go. Training going almost to plan, although I need a couple of races. This week I have been very tired. I don't know whether its all the training or I am working too hard. Wish I could win the lottery.

27th February ~ 79 days to go. I have been a bit lazy over the past couple of weeks. My excuse is that I work too hard and don’t have enough time or energy left. Then I look at my e-mails and WOW thanks every oneYou give me the motivation to get out there. I have been training, in addition to running to or  from work (or both) I have done a couple of runs over 2 hours (one trail & hill run for 3hours) and I have completed 2 races. One 10k road race around the Great Orme, and the other a trail race which was supposed to be 10k but was nearer 12. I am racing again on Sunday (mothers Day) Half marathon in Paris. You know where my thoughts will be.

Paris Half Marathon ~ My time was 1h39'41'' .  (I finished 18th in my category out of 927 or 3507 / 20,000+)

Ballycotton 10 on the 9th March~ 523/2,000+, 12th in my cat. In just under 73mins, Had a good race, just need to practice some steps now

Todays long training run ~ 3 hours~34k~2054 steps (the hard/solid ones, not just foot steps), and a great deal of sweat.

Next event ~ Abseiling down a multi-storey car park next to the Malmaison in Liverpool on 30th March. A Big thanks to my work colleagues who have volunteered to abseil with me, and Tracey at MacMillan cancer support who gave me the information.

21st March ~ Good Friday  ~ 56 Days to Go (did you see my mention in the Liverpool Echo on Wednesday evening)

22nd March ~ took part in the Rivington Pike Fell Race(3rd F40), then ran the course again for good measure!!!!

30th March ~ 47 days to go ~ Thank you to my colleagues at RBS  who abseiled with me today (see pictures on the left), and all those who sponsored us. I will let you know how much we raised as soon as I know.

15th April ~ 31 days to go. How scary is that? Well training is going well.I am fitting in plenty of long runs with loads of steps!!!! I've been good and kept up with most of my hard sessions (Glen, I'm sure I will be grateful on the day-for now I just think your trying to get me back for when we were little). An update on the abseil sponsorship.....We have collected £919.50 with a little more still to come. We think we will hit the thousand and get it matched by RBS Thanks again everyone. (Updated figure £1035)

20th April ~ 26 days to go. I have done the hardest training sessions ever this week. Circuit training Monday, couple of runs over the hour, three hours Saturday and Today, Sunday, I ran for 1hour 40 followed by a session of 6 by a lap of the Blackwoods (approx 1 kilometre) and a 40 min run home. After all thatI fell asleep in the bath!!! But on a good note the training must be paying off somewhere along the line. Yesterday I was invited to represent Merseyside in an Inter-counties fell race. Unfortunately the race is on the 11th May and it just would not be wise 6 days before The Marathon. Thanks for the invite though. (They must be desperate). Weather today in Tianjin (where the marathon takes place) was raining /14C (the average high in May is 27C)

1st May ~ 15 days to go. I am feeling very nervous, terrified would probably better describe my feelings. Thanks for everyone's words of encouragement. I am sure if I didn't think I was letting so many people down I would have pulled out of this a long time ago. Thanks for keeping me going. What do you think of the amount already raised? And I have alot more pledged, so thanks again (do I say thanks too much, well I am grateful and so are Macmillan's) The weather in Tainjin today is Sunny /18C but they are expecting heavy showers/12c tomorow (that gives me hope with only a fortnight to go)

21st May ~ Marathon complete ~ Home in one piece. Well what can I say?? The Marathon was just as hard as I expected although the weather was kind. It was hot but not too hot, although I still managed to burn my nose (nothing un usual there though). I completed the race in a very pleasing 4 hours 55 minutes ( I had expected it to take me 6 hours) I did have to walk the most of the wall the second time around. I am sure someone added some steps and made it steeper. I did manage to save enough energy to RUN the last 5k almost as fast as I had run the first.. Now for the hard bit, collecting the sponsorship money off all those who did not come online. Thanks again for all your support whether in the form of money, on or offline, or all your words of encouragement, I could not have completed the Great wall Marathon without your help.

I have uploaded photos from my trip to Flickr. If the hyper link does not work try copy & paste. http://www.flickr.com/photos/photopam/sets/72157605179291791 for best results click on the slide show icon.

30th May 2008 ~ thought you may like to see a bit of the wall I came to love!! See main picture.

14th June 2008 ~ Still got some sponsorship money to come in but it's payday soon so I think I will get the bulk of whats left then. But just look at that total I am nearly there, THANK YOU ALL. I have reset the page picture so you can see who this was all for. In Memory of Heather Groves (Mum I will never forget you).

more updates soon, I will let you know the total as soon as possible.

Love Pam
