We are a 24 hour search & rescue service to save lives at sea

Story

On the 26th April 2009 I will be (stupidly) running the London Marathon (again). This year my charity of choice is the RNLI, the UK’s very own answer to Baywatch (cue theme tune and thoughts of Pamela running through the surf on Brighton Beach in a dry suit, life ring tucked under her arm)

So why do I want to support the RNLI? The first reason is that I grew up by the sea and being a very good boy scout I helped the Shoreham Lifeboat polish their brass whenever it got all salty. The second reason is every year I go to Woolacombe surfing (aka being bashed around by big waves and spluttering around in the cold sea) with friends. The beach is patrolled by RNLI Lifeguards, so this is a charity I might actually need help from!

The RNLI provides a 24-hour lifesaving service around the UK and Republic of Ireland and rescues over 8000 people a year (an average of 21 a day). It receives no government money and is funded entirely by donations with the majority of lifeboats crewed by volunteers.

I really do appreciate everyone’s support with all my charitable events over the past three years. Despite the credit crunch I really hope you see the RNLI (or me) as a great charitable cause. The money I raise through running the marathon will help save more lives at sea.

Donating as little as £10 is just giving up 3 alcoholic drinks, a tiny sacrifice which will help save lives.

Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Before anyone suggests

- NO I won’t be running the marathon in a dry suit, a bit too hot and sweaty for my liking and surprisingly they don’t make them with integrated running shoes

- NO I won’t be running the marathon in a red swimming costume and blonde wig, I may look particularly hot, but the chaffing I will get is too painful to even think about!

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: RNLI - Royal National Lifeboat Institution gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews provide a 24-hour search and rescue service all around the UK and Ireland, while lifeguards keep a careful watch on the UK’s busiest beaches. RNLI lifesaving and drowning prevention depend on supporter fundraising and the generous donations that you and others give.
