Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are raising money for The Fiona Elizabeth Agnew Trust (SEPSIS F.E.A.T) in memory of our dear friend Polly. Here is her story...

On the 28th of February, Polly; a healthy and active 32 year old, became unwell. Nothing out of the ordinary, your typical cold/flu like symptoms. The snow had made it's way to Devon and Polly took advantage of the snow day and rested at home. After a couple days normal service resumed and the snow had begun to melt. However, Polly still felt unwell with hot and cold flushes, aches and low energy, so she stayed at home to rest up over the weekend. Over the weekend Polly's symptoms began to intensify with extreme sweating, extremely high temperature and dehydration. She also began to notice a pain in her leg which by the Sunday she wasn't able to walk on.

Monday morning she arranged an appointment to discuss her symptoms and the pain in her leg. The Doctor thought she may have had a blood clot in her leg and referred her into A&E to have it looked at in more depth. She spent the evening having the usual assessments and bloods taken and was texting her friends and family to let them know what was happening. This was to be the last time we heard from her.

Upon receiving her blood results the hospital identified a serious anomaly which needed urgent attention. Polly was rushed into surgery to have an emergency amputation of her leg. From here she was sent to the Intensive Care Unit, where they later identified Sepsis. Not only was it sepsis, but it had developed into the very rare Necrotising Fasciitis (a flesh eating disease). This spread very rapidly and without warning. She was given antibiotics and was in an induced coma, the rest was down to her body to fight.

Sadly within 48 hours of going into A&E, on the 7th March 2018, Polly passed away.

Understandably, it was a huge shock to her family and friends and shook the whole community. Nobody could understand or believe that this had happened to some one so young and so quickly without warning.

We are sharing Polly's story and all its detail to help raise awareness of the symptoms and dangers of Sepsis. We are aware of recent cases of Sepsis within our community since Polly's death, and the increased awareness of Sepsis in the hospital has helped to save lives, for which we are truly grateful.

Sepsis kills 5 people an hour in the UK!

25,000 children are affected by Sepsis each year in the UK!

Know the early warning signs...

We are running the Bournemouth Supersonic 10k in memory of our dear friend Polly. We would appreciate any donations to help support SEPSIS F.E.A.T in spreading the awareness of sepsis and research into it's detection and prevention.

Love,

Natalie and Hayley x
