Story
Liane Ashberry died by suicide in April 2015.
Liane lost her daughter Ella age 11 to bone cancer in 2009, and became a major fundraiser for the Bone Cancer Research Trust and children's cancer treatment. Liane and I ran the London half marathon together for BCRT in 2012. Liane's story and our songs about her life and love and loss are at www.rudeangel.co.uk. You can download the album and booklet for free. Please do so, and share it. It's all beautiful, especially Liane's words, which are now so much about Liane, as well as Ella.
I ran the London Marathon in 2016, the Beachy Head Marathon in 2016, and the Beachy Head Marathon again in 2017, during which time I was visited by some additional traumas, which pushed me deeper into my own suicidal crisis, starting in 2015, from which I am emerging (as at 2018). Running, and a few other simple things, notably the love of friends and family, kept me safe.
I have learned a lot about mental illness and suicide, and I continue to learn, and grow. I am so very lucky. I have it easy. Millions.. billions do not.
A million people die by suicide every year. The fastest rising rate is among young people.
Bone cancer is in many cases incurable. Many other terrible diseases are incurable. Dementia for example.
Suicide however is preventable. Suicide prevention does not necessarily cost any money; it's a societal thing. Society causes suicide, and society can prevent suicide.
My fundraising here will hopefully begin again. Please give money to help find cures for incurable diseases; and also please help change awareness, attitudes, and society, to prevent suicide.
I find myself now organising The Festival of Life and Death (www.festivaloflifeanddeath.org) - an outrageous idea to end suicide globally, and to help make society well, or better, to whatever degree is possible.
Suicide prevention automatically improves everything else in life.
Liane's example is the main inspiration for my new life purpose.
Thank you everyone for your wonderful generosity and kindness.
