Raleigh is a UK charity that focuses on youth development, and has been operating in Sabah, a Malaysian state on the island of Borneo since 2002.
Thousands of volunteers from all over the world have since been coming to Sabah to develop life skills through working on community and environmental projects that have benefitted the communities and environments in Sabah. They have also had the chance to explore Sabah’s jungles and seas to learn to appreciate some of the world’s best natural environments.
Every year we recruit between 40 to 60 young Malaysians to be included in our expeditions. All participants are steered to recognise their own strengths and weaknesses, to develop confidence, as well as to gain key skills such as communication, team work, leadership and adaptability while on expedition.
It is undeniable that the skills that they learn on expedition have been a powerful enabler to make positive changes to their lives and to the lives of their community once they return from an expedition.
Ten staff members from the United Kingdom and Malaysia will attempt to conquer Mount Kinabalu (4095.2m) this December as our fundraising campaign for our Host Country Venturer Programme, which enables young Malaysian participants to be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime learning experience. We are hoping to raise at least £2,000.00 for the programme, which will help us cover expedition costs for 2-3 Malaysian participants on a 10-week expedition. To make it interesting and to coincide with the festivities, they will be dressed as Santa and his Elves!
