Story
Thank you for visiting the Reach:2008 fundraising page.
Reach 2008: Kenya, Educating through Sport' is a charity project that is being undertaken by student members of the University of Manchester SPORT department in conjunction with SOS Children’s Villages.
All funds raised will go towards helping SOS children in the east African country of Kenya. The country has seen rapid population growth and the disproportionate distribution of income have served to worsen social problems. Increased migration to the industrial centres has lead to the creation of large slum areas and has been hit hard by HIV/AIDS.
This project is focused around the belief that by engaging children in enjoyable physical activity they develop a multitude of skills, including among others teamwork, communication and leadership. By gaining these skills it is hoped that these children will become greater assets to their communities and enable them to enjoy a brighter future.
Last year the Reach project raised £18,000 for SOS children's Villages South Africa. This bulk of the money went towards a family strengthening programme as well as a children’s village home that house orphans of a variety of ages, so that they can be cared for and become valuable members of their community. Further funds were used to sponsor an HIV Awareness prevention community project and went towards supporting facility requirement needs at the particular villages that were visited.
