We fund long-term, sustainable research to find a cure for brain tumours

Story

It is just 4 years since Richard was told he had a brain tumour.  He bravely faced surgery three times, radiotherapy at Princes Royal and chemotherapy at Castle Hill.  Never once did he look back.  Never once did he complain. Although the treatment made him ill he never gave up hope.  He has amazed the medical staff who came to know him.  Even after his stroke before Christmas he battled on, and was determined to improve his mobility bit by bit every day and achieved more than the doctors and physio thought possible in the short time he had left.  In the end, Richard lost his long battle with the tumour and died peacefully, with the same dignity he had shown through life, on Saturday 27th February 2010.

We have so many wonderful memories of the time we spent with Richard.  His courage, determination, and concern for others has touched the lives of so many people.  This is a sad time for all of us; the world is a little greyer. Anyone who met him had their lives enriched.  Those who really knew him were touched by his passion for life, his sense of humour, his generosity and his courage.  We want you to smile when you think of Richard.  He would have wanted that too.

While he was alive, Richard was always very keen to help with any research that he could.  We thought that he would have liked to continue to help, so in lieu of flowers at the funeral we are encouraging donations to Brain Tumour Research.  Unlike other types of cancer, research into brain tumours has been quite limited.  As a result, the survival rates are still very poor for people affected by the same tumour as Richard had.  Brain Tumour Research is actively funding UK based research with the hope of making advances in treatment and prognosis like those that have been seen with other types of cancer.  Please help us to help others affected by the same condition in the future.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.  Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.  Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer.  So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this disease. We are a leading voice calling for support and action for research into what is called the last battleground against cancer.
