Story
Pictured (left to right) John Charlton, Chris Harrison, Christine Liversedge, John Farrow, Samantha Day, Neil Nichol, Andy Jackson, Nina Jackson, Tracy Graham - Paddy Robinson and Richard Graham (not pictured) have taken up the challenge to ride from the 'Hadrians Way' west coast to east coast - Silloth to Tynemouth - over 3 days, 8th, 9th and 10th June.
We have selected to support the MS Trust at the request of Christine who's mum suffers from MS.
Multiple Sclerosis is an incurable condition of the central nervous system and is the most common cause of neurological disability in young adults - 50 people are diagnosed every week in the UK. A diagnosis of MS means uncertainty and variability, simply not knowing from one day to the next how you're going to feel. It can take away the ability to plan and to feel in control - particularly frustrating when diagnosis usually happens in peoples 20's and 30's as they are making life choices about careers, homes, relationships and families and then, should you be over 50, frequently advised you are 'too old' to benefit from expensive medication!
It is difficult to explain the frustration caused by this condition - loss of control of various functions of the body, loss of independence. This quote from a young girl, diagnosed at just 21, gives some idea.
"At the time it was a bit of a relief to know why I kept having strange sypmtoms: dizziness, loss of balance, double vision and fatigue, although this was closely followed by fear as I wondered how this currently incurable disease would manifest itself. As the years when by I had minor relapses, but then things became more serious - I lost the ability to walk, to be able to see properly and was constantly nauseous due to balance problems".
There are 85,000 people in the UK with MS. The MS Trust provides information to people with MS, their family and friends; educates MS nurses and other health and social care professionals; funds practical research and campaigns for better services. They believe that everyone diagnosed with MS should have access to an MS nurse, akin to Macmillan nurses for people with cancer.
