We fund research into type 1 diabetes to find a cure for type 1 diabetes

Story

We did it!!!! We both got round despite the heat and without stopping! (Details on the London Marathon web page). Thank you all for your support.

Our seven year old daughter, Polly, has Type 1 Diabetes.  She has been living with this life threatening and incurable illness since she was two and a half.

From the outside she is just like any other seven year old. However, look closely and you will see that she is wearing something resembling a money belt with a wire poking out.  This is Polly's insulin pump, her "artificial pancreas" that she is attached to 24 hours a day, every day for the rest of her life.  It drip feeds insulin into her body constantly over a 24 hour period, helping to stabilise her blood sugar levels.  Without it, she would not survive 24 hours.

In addition to her insulin pump, we have to test her blood, by pricking her finger, at least five times a day.  That is 8,000 times and counting since her diagnosis.  We often have to wake her in the middle of the night to give her some glucose if her sugar levels have dropped dangerously low, or some insulin if they are running high.

There are 20,000 children in the UK who have Type 1 Diabetes and the number is growing at a steady rate.  There is a high risk that Polly will have a reduction in life expectancy (15-20 years), suffer loss of sight or limbs.

The physical test we are putting ourselves through by running 26 miles is nothing compared to what Polly endures every day and for every day of her life until a cure is found.  There is NO break for Polly and NO cure.

JDRF is a charity dedicated to finding a cure and making Type 1 Diabetes history!

Help us to raise enough money so that, through research, one day a cure will be found, and hopefully that day will be in Polly's lifetime.

Thank you!

Rupert and Juliet.
