Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Sean Going, son of Cpl Richard Henry Going. He served in the Armed Forces from 1981 to 1990 when he tragically passed away. But I understand, and was told, that he was struggling mentally with the effects of war. He had taken part in the Falklands war, Northern Ireland troubles and lastly Gulf 1.
I can still remember all the times he would wake up the whole household because he was having a nightmare, barking orders and shouting out names of fellow soldiers. On his last day on earth, he had phoned up my grandparents from Saudi Arabia, in tears, to ask them if they were proud of him for serving in the British Army. Hours later, they received the news that he had passed away.
He suffered a lot mentally and there was very little help for him at that time. He developed mental issues which led to anger problems, marital issues, financial difficulties and he also became an alcoholic.
It is very likely that he committed suicide, while he was on tour of duty, though I will never know for sure. I have had to accept that fact, but rather than lament on it, I want to help those who can be helped. As I am no psychiatrist, I have, instead, lost over 3 stone in weight and have been working hard on my fitness, so that I can use that to the advantage of gaining financial support for the Combat Stress charity, to enable them to help others like my dad.
2015 marks 25 years since my dad passed away and to commemorate his memory I intend to take part in three events, the Silverstone Half Marathon (March 2015), the Paras 10 (July 2015) and the Spartan Race (September 2015).
I would greatly appreciate any support you are willing to give for this worthy cause.
